Experience

Flaviana Charles is a seasoned and respected business and human rights expert serving as the Executive Director of Business and Human Rights Tanzania (BHRT) and a mediator under the African Union’s FemWise-Africa network for women in conflict prevention and mediation.

Flaviana holds various regional and continental leadership roles including Chairperson of the Coalition of Women Human Rights Defenders in Tanzania and the Secretary General of the African Bar Association (AFBA). She is a past Vice President of the Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) and serves as an editor for the Business and Human Rights Journal (BHRJ), published by Cambridge University Press.

She holds a Master’s in International Law and Human Rights from Coventry University, UK and is pursuing a PhD at the Open University of Tanzania. She has extensive experience in legal advocacy, corporate governance, and mediation, with certifications in legislative drafting, arbitration, and ISO 26000 Social Responsibility. In addition to being a respected speaker and trainer, she has presented at the United Nations in Geneva, the African Regional Forum in Ethiopia, and various business and human rights forums globally. Her publications focus on corporate accountability, environmental rights, and gender equity in the extractive sector. Flaviana is also a university lecturer and a board member of Tangible Initiative for Local Development in Tanzania. Her work continues to shape responsible business practices and human rights policies across Africa.
